Septoplasty
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve airflow through the nose by correcting structural issues within the nasal septum. Difficulty breathing through the nose can affect sleep, exercise, energy levels, and overall quality of life. In some cases, these symptoms may be caused by a deviated septum — a condition in which the wall separating the nasal passages is displaced or uneven.

At OC ENT & Sinus, Dr. Michael K. Kim evaluates patients experiencing chronic nasal obstruction and offers personalized treatment options, including septoplasty surgery when appropriate.

What is a Deviated Septum?
The nasal septum is the thin wall made of cartilage and bone that separates the left and right nasal passages. When the septum is significantly off-center or crooked, it may partially block airflow through the nose.
A deviated septum can contribute to symptoms such as:
-
Chronic nasal congestion
-
Difficulty breathing through the nose
-
Mouth breathing
-
Snoring
-
Sleep disruption
-
Recurrent sinus infections
-
Nosebleeds
-
Facial pressure or headaches
Some patients are born with a deviated septum, while others develop it following injury or trauma to the nose.
What is Septoplasty?
Septoplasty is a procedure used to straighten or reposition portions of the nasal septum in order to improve airflow through the nasal passages.

The procedure is performed entirely inside the nose in many cases, meaning there are often no visible external incisions. Treatment plans are individualized based on each patient’s anatomy, symptoms, and overall health.

In some situations, septoplasty may be combined with additional procedures to address other nasal or sinus concerns.

Who May Benefit from Septoplasty?
Patients experiencing persistent nasal obstruction or breathing difficulties may benefit from an evaluation by an ENT specialist.
Septoplasty may be considered for individuals with:
-
Ongoing nasal blockage
-
Difficulty breathing through one or both sides of the nose
-
Chronic mouth breathing
-
Frequent sinus infections
-
Snoring or sleep-related breathing concerns
-
Nasal obstruction affecting quality of life
At OC ENT & Sinus, we perform a comprehensive examination to determine whether septoplasty may be an appropriate treatment option.
Seasonal Allergies
Allergies that occur during specific times of the year, often related to pollen exposure.
Perennial Allergies
Allergies that occur year-round and are typically associated with indoor allergens.
Non-Allergic Rhinitis
Involves similar symptoms but is triggered by irritants rather than an immune response.
Recovery After Septoplasty
Recovery experiences vary from patient to patient. Mild congestion, swelling, or discomfort may occur during the healing process.
Post-procedure recommendations may include:
-
Keeping the head elevated
-
Avoiding strenuous activity temporarily
-
Using saline rinses or prescribed medications
-
Avoiding smoke, dust, and other irritants
-
Attending follow-up appointments
Many patients are able to resume normal activities within several days, depending on healing and physician guidance.
Potential Benefits of Septoplasty
Some patients may experience:
-
Improved nasal airflow
-
Easier breathing through the nose
-
Reduced mouth breathing
-
Better sleep quality
-
Fewer sinus-related symptoms
Individual outcomes vary depending on the severity of the deviation and other underlying conditions.
Antihistamines, nasal corticosteroid sprays, and decongestants (short-term use) may help inflammation and reduce symptoms.
Allergy testing may be recommended to help identify specific triggers contributing to your symptoms. This information can be used to guide treatment and avoidance strategies. For some patients, finding out what they’re allergic to is necessary for preventing potentially life-threatening reactions, such as allergies to bee stings or nuts.
Immunotherapy may be recommended for some patients with persistent allergy symptoms. This treatment involves gradually exposing the body to small amounts of allergens over time, which may help reduce sensitivity. It is typically considered when symptoms are not well-controlled with medications or avoidance strategies.
In some cases, additional in-office treatments may be considered to help manage chronic nasal symptoms related to allergies. These options are typically recommended based on individual evaluation and symptom severity.
In addition to medical treatment, certain lifestyle adjustments may help reduce exposure to triggers such as:
-
Keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons
-
Using air filtration systems
-
Washing bedding regularly
-
Avoiding known irritants such as smoke
These steps may help improve symptom control when combined with treatment.
-
You may consider seeking evaluation if symptoms are persistent or worsening, over-the-counter treatments are not effective, symptoms interfere with sleep or daily activities, or you are unsure of the cause of your symptoms.
Dr. Kim commonly uses skin and blood tests for allergy testing. Skin tests include skin patch tests, skin prick tests, and intradermal tests. Oral food challenges and elimination diets may be used to test for food allergies.
Pollen
Trees, grasses, and weeds
Dust Mites
Common in bedding and upholstery
Mold
Found in damp indoor or outdoor environments
Pet Dander
Skin cells and saliva from animals
Irritants
Smoke, pollution, or strong odors
What to Expect During Septoplasty Surgery
Septoplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the patient and treatment plan. During the procedure, the surgeon carefully reshapes or repositions portions of cartilage and bone within the septum to improve airflow.

The procedure generally takes between 30 and 90 minutes, though timing varies based on the complexity of the case. In many cases, patients return home the same day.
