Balloon Sinus Dilation

Chronic sinus symptoms can make everyday life uncomfortable. Ongoing congestion, facial pressure, postnasal drip, and difficulty breathing through the nose may interfere with sleep, work, exercise, and daily activities.

At OC ENT & Sinus, we evaluate patients experiencing chronic sinus concerns and offer a range of treatment options, including balloon sinus dilation — a minimally invasive procedure designed to help improve sinus drainage and reduce chronic sinus symptoms in appropriate candidates.

Balloon sinus dilation (or balloon sinuplasty) is an in-office, minimally invasive sinus procedure used to gently open blocked sinus pathways. During treatment, a small balloon catheter is inserted into the sinus passage and carefully expanded to help improve drainage while preserving surrounding tissue. The procedure is minimally invasive and does not typically involve cutting or removing bone or tissue. Balloon sinus dilation may be recommended for certain patients with chronic or recurrent sinus symptoms that have not improved with conservative treatment.

Improved sinus drainage

Reduced congestion

Decreased sinus pressure

Fewer sinus infections

Improved nasal airflow

Improved chronic sinusitis

  • Patients experiencing ongoing sinus symptoms despite medication or other conservative therapies may benefit from an ENT evaluation. You may be a candidate if you experience:

    • Chronic sinusitis

    • Recurrent sinus infections

    • Persistent congestion

    • Facial pressure

    • Nasal drainage or postnasal drip

    • Difficulty breathing through the nose

  • Balloon sinus dilation is typically performed in the office using local anesthesia to help keep patients comfortable. During the procedure:

    1. A small balloon catheter is guided into the sinus opening.

    2. The balloon is gently expanded to widen the blocked pathway.

    3. The balloon is then removed, leaving the sinus opening enlarged to support drainage.

Many patients are able to return home shortly after the procedure and resume normal activities within a short period of time, depending on individual recovery.

  • Most patients tolerate the procedure well. Your provider will discuss anesthesia and comfort measures during your consultation.

  • Recovery experiences vary from patient to patient, though many individuals are able to return to normal routines relatively quickly. Some individuals may experience mild congestion, pressure, or drainage during the healing process.

    Post-procedure recommendations may include:

    • Saline nasal rinses

    • Temporary activity restrictions

    • Follow-up visits

    • Medications to reduce inflammation when appropriate
